Concussions

A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury caused by a blow or jolt to the head or body, which results in temporary impairment of brain function. Although it is considered a mild form of brain injury, it is important to recognize and address it promptly to prevent further damage.

Here are some common signs and symptoms of a concussion:

  1. Headache: A headache is one of the most common symptoms of a concussion, and it may be accompanied by pressure or a feeling of heaviness in the head.

  2. Dizziness or loss of balance: A person with a concussion may experience dizziness, lightheadedness, or loss of balance.

  3. Confusion: A person with a concussion may feel confused, disoriented, or have difficulty remembering things.

  4. Nausea or vomiting: Nausea or vomiting may occur after a concussion.

  5. Sensitivity to light or noise: A person with a concussion may be sensitive to light or noise, and may find it difficult to tolerate loud sounds or bright lights.

  6. Changes in mood or behavior: A person with a concussion may become irritable, anxious, or depressed.

  7. Loss of consciousness: A person with a concussion may lose consciousness briefly, although this is not always the case.

Chiropractic Care & Concussions

  1. Gentle neurological adjustments: which are the primary treatment technique used by chiropractors, involve applying gentle pressure or force to specific areas of the spine to help restore neurological communication, proper alignment, and movement. This can help reduce inflammation and improve circulation, which can promote healing and reduce pain and other symptoms.

  2. Soft tissue therapy: such as myofascial release, can help reduce muscle tension and promote relaxation, which can be especially helpful for patients who experience headaches, neck pain, or other symptoms after a concussion.

  3. Craniosacral therapy: which involves gentle movement of the bones in the skull and spinal column, this can help promote the movement of cerebrospinal fluid, which can help improve brain function and reduce symptoms associated with a concussion.
