GERD

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a condition in which stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, causing irritation and discomfort. GERD can affect people of all ages, including children. Here are some signs and symptoms of GERD in kids:

  1. Frequent vomiting: Children with GERD may vomit frequently or seem to spit up after meals.

  2. Abdominal pain: Children with GERD may complain of abdominal pain, which can be sharp or dull.

  3. Difficulty swallowing: Children with GERD may have difficulty swallowing, which can cause them to avoid certain foods.

  4. Regurgitation: Children with GERD may experience regurgitation, which is when food or liquid comes back up into the mouth after swallowing.

  5. Chronic cough: Children with GERD may have a chronic cough that doesn't seem to go away, even after treatment for a cold or other respiratory illness.

  6. Respiratory problems: GERD can cause respiratory problems in children, including wheezing, asthma, and pneumonia.

  7. Poor weight gain: Children with GERD may have difficulty gaining weight or may even lose weight because they are not eating enough due to discomfort.

Chiropractic Care & GERD

  1. Neurological Adjustment: Through the use of state-of-the-art technology, neurology-based chiropractors can analyze if there are any neurological interferences potentially causing the muscles that close the stomach on the superior pole from closing tightly. When proper communication improves and persists, GERD can be relieved.

  1. Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics in 2011 looked at the effects of chiropractic adjustments on GERD symptoms in 21 adults. The study found that the participants reported significant improvement in their GERD symptoms after receiving chiropractic care. However, this was a small study with no control group, so it's difficult to draw firm conclusions.

  2. A 2015 case report published in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine described the successful treatment of a 7-year-old child with GERD using chiropractic adjustments.
